What is Broccolini?

Though the word “broccolini” may sound similar to the old childhood nemesis broccoli, the two are actually completely distinct, with far fewer commonalities than you might guess.

In terms of taste, broccolini is both milder and slightly sweeter, with less of the bitter aftertaste that so many still associate with traditional broccoli.

Whereas broccoli grows in a single thick, chewy stalk, broccolini is a longer, thinner vegetable. Ingredients

1 pound of broccolini
5 cloves of garlic
1 tablespoon of extra virgin olive oil

1/3 cup of water
Salt (to taste)

Instructions

  1. Prepare this veggie by rinsing, drying, and cutting off the rough ends of the stem, removing roughly 1/2 an inch from the bottom.
  2. Chop the garlic into fine slivers.
  3. Heat the oil in a saute pan over medium heat. Add the garlic and allow to simmer for roughly thirty seconds, stirring to ensure even cooking.
  4. Add the broccolini to the pan and toss in the garlic and oil. Continue to cook for around eight minutes, until the tips of the florets are slightly charred.
  5. Add the salt and water to the pan, then cover. Allow the broccolini to steam for about two additional minutes, until they have reached the desired level of softness and flavor. The finished dish should be brilliantly green and ready to plate.
